Over the past few years, Altoona students have had a three-day week for spring break. We get Friday before Easter and Monday after Easter off ,but we always end up having a snow day on Easter Monday.
These days off are considered spring break. It is actually just a long weekend.
Colleges usually get a week off for spring break. Bishop Guilfoyle, the local catholic high school, has a virtual day April 13. A virtual day is when students stay home and do their school work on their iPads. BG is also off Apr. 14, 16 and 17.
An excuse might be that they are a catholic school and they always get more days off. But, Hollidaysburg had the same amount of days off as BG, except for Apr. 17. That is now a snow make up day for Hollidaysburg.
Local schools around us, for example Bellwood Antis and State College, have longer spring breaks that started Apr. 13 and lasted through the 17.
Most schools this year have shorter breaks due to snow makeup days. Bellwood, Hollidaysburg, and Altoona have snow makeup days over the break.
During the last five months of the school year, we have very little days off and no long breaks.
Students should have a break before the fourth marking period. The last few months of the school year tend to be the most stressful. We have to worry about Keystones, finals, and for some students, the SAT.
Taking a break before these will help students relax before dealing with end of the school year stress.
